BISHOP 1. Your damned letter to the Emperor –
URI TUPKA. How could I not?
When he commissioned a giant goat statue – a hundred feet tall and solid
gold…?
BISHOP 1. And didn’t we warn you what would happpen? Didn’t we
all warn you?
It was only to remind him. Scripture. Theodipus 6:19
– “And all men shall be equal to each other under the eyes of the gods, even as
all the gods, like leaves of grass, shall be equal to each other.
URI TUPKA. Did the bandit chief run off with my purse? I think he did. Did he
actually escape? I doubt it. All I knew for sure was that I’d set out
disguised as a poor pilgrim and now… I actually was one.
URI TUPKA. Evil? What does that mean…? Why should anything be forbidden? Was
it worth it…? The comfort of the gods… Their paradise denied us forever…
Gozeg… Was it worth it?
DUCK. He saw the great tree of the gods, how they were born out of it… How
they lived in the shadow of it, and they left to scatter all over the world. And
he resolved there to build a great cathedral, dedicated to all the gods, so
that they might be recognized as the family they were – and where,
sometimes, they might come together and be a family again.
PRIEST. All day, every day, the rich come here to offer up treasures they can
easily afford to pray for more of what they already have. It’s past time some of
it went to an honest man who might put it to good use.
KATOR. I could not stop my arm, and as I struck him dead my own father struck me
blind.
URI TUPKA. Did he?
I can still feel his bolt of lightning
crashing into my face. It was not uncommon in those days for the gods to strike
their sons with lightning –
URI TUPKA. I know, but in the epics the
champion of Ishak is called Tigon Ironhead… That his father gifted him
with an indestructible skull and that you were blinded by the shattered bits of
your own axe.
URI TUPKA. I understand now why they left our world. I saw it… The
Unknowable Thing. The thing that corrupted the world before, ruined it so
completely that the dragon was forced to destroy that world and start again.
The gods have not abandoned us. They’ve cared for us from the beginning and they
care for us still. They are out there, holding this thing back as best as they
can, because it longs to poison our world as it did the one before.
BISHOP 1. You didn’t know Becktoven, He went there and came back mad. They used
to lock him in a basement during thunderstorms. One night he got out, took off
running naked through a field, and something swooped down and snatched off his
head.
BISHOP 2. I don’t think that last part is true.
BISHOP 1.
Which part? The naked part?
