[Rev. Anderson] I know… How completely I failed you. You brought me face to face with the Devil himself… And I didn’t have the strength to confront him. Am I no longer worthy to do your work? Is that why I have no power over these demons? Have I offended you?

[Megan] You’re the same goddamn rapist you’ve always been. Nothing’s changed… You just want it to. I’m not forgiving you. I have to live with the pain you caused me. You have to live with knowing what you did… and deep down… what a monster you’ll always be.

[Kyle] I know that because my mother is never going to wake up… And I did the same thing to her. She’s been in a fucking bed ever since. That’s what we did to Sherry. That’s the truth! You can tell yourself we saved her soul – that we helped her in some way… But that’s bullshit! [Rev. Anderson] I know you’re upset, but you don’t need to yell at me. You don’t have faith, I get it… Okay? You don’t have to throw it in my face every chance you get. I don’t understand how you refuse to believe after everything you’ve witnessed… But I’ve accepted your willful ignorance to what’s happening around you. Sherry had a demon in her. You saw it leave her body. You saved her from that! You saved her! We stopped evil and saved that girl from it.

[Allison] The hardest part is, if I could erase… ten minutes from our lives together… it’d be perfect. Do you realize that? Take that one moment out… And it’s perfect. You never showed me even a hint of who you might be until then… And now… Now you’re sitting here, and I see you… And you’re the man I still love… That I miss so much…

[Rev. Anderson] Yield to the power granted me by our Almighty Lord! [Kyle, splashing water] Looks like normal water has the exact same effect…

[Kyle] It wasn’t a gift from God… The words. [Rev. Anderson] And what makes you so damn sure? Don’t read me the riot act for saying I know things it turns out I don’t… And then make bold fucking statements like that when you have no clue. You figure out a few things and then think you know everything? That’s bullshit.

[Rev. Anderson] Sorry, guys… I’ve got a lot on my mind here. Something I’d prefer not leave this table, you understand? It’s a radical theory… And I don’t know how I feel about it just yet. [Gambler #1] Oh, please. Lay it on us. [Gambler #2] This ought to be good. [Rev. Anderson] I think God is an asshole. Truth be told. I’ve had this theory for a while… Old Testament and all speaking plainly, Guy seems like He’s got a real hard-on for our kind. People, I mean. Doesn’t it seem to you… Sometimes… Like He’s just… Well… Fucking with us? [Gambler #1] Pretty sure the good Lord above would prefer I not weigh in on this one. [Rev. Anderson] I’ll take that as a big ol' giant fucking yes.

[Rev. Anderson] Be a good person… Do good deeds… That’s how you get into heaven? That’s so subjective. I know I’ve done something I’d swear is good, but other people from another perspective would see that as downright dastardly. So what the hell is good? I think it’s all a big puzzle… With rules you have to figure out for yourself. If you figure out the game before you die… That’s when you get the reward. If you don’t… Well, you’re shit out of luck. I think there are hints and clues along the way, boys. And if you’re not looking for them… Or if you read them wrong… Well, you down that path… Maybe you devote your whole goddamn life to that path, thinking what you saw means a certain thing… So be careful.

Character development. Anderson has two different personas. With Kyle, he over-indexes on faith. With his poker buddies, he professes skepticism.

[Kyle] Not listening and not believing are two different things. [Sidney] Believing? Maybe don’t use such loaded words around the poor reverend.

[Sidney] There are no angels or demons. Those are just names you gave us because you were too small… Too stupid to grasp the bigger picture. You were lost in the darkness we created… Picturing shapes you could feel but couldn’t see. Answers you told yourselves after you got the question completely wrong. … You had such a great life, and you gave it all up, turned your back on the ones you loved the most… For a lie. Heh. And you think I’m a demon.

[Rev. Anderson] You think the Devil can be murdered?! I have slain a vessel corrupted by pure evil! I have rid the world of an agent of darkness hell-bent on destroying us! I have not committed the sin of murder! This was no man… Look at him! Don’t you see the black filth from the deepest pits of hell pouring out of him?!

Rev. Anderson’s path captivated me more than anyone else’s; maybe because I was raised Christian? In , Anderson was very steadfast, but in , he seriously doubts. By , he needs to be believe, because otherwise, in his view, he becomes a murderer.

[Rev. Anderson] For this is not a flock of sheep I stand before now – you are lions! And you sit before me with your eyes open to the evils of the world! You can feel it – all around us building – threatening to swallow us whole! The darkness I have faced head-on – that marked me – is here, and it is real! We do not fear it! We do not pretend that it is not there! We prepare! We strengthen ourselves with the word of our Lord and Savior! For soon we will face this darkness in battle!

Had my dose of a spiritual warfare mindset in high school. Read without being exposed to counter-arguments like . For a time, the Devil was literal to me. There is a sense of purpose thinking you’re part of something grand.

[Rev. Anderson] But you are a man without faith. That has always been true about you. It’s easy for you to take what you heard and use it to reaffirm your skepticism. That is your mindset. That’s the corner from which you approach things. You hear these things and you line them up with your already established opinions… You use your conclusions to shape what it is your father said to you. To my ear – you just told me some of the same stories I’ve been hearing my entire life. You just used different words.

[Ex-possessed #1] Seems to me like they’re the ones who really need to talk about what they experienced. [Ex-possessed #2] What makes you say that? [Ex-possessed #1] Maybe it was different for you. But while it was happening to me… I kind of liked it.

[News Anchor] We haven’t reported on the Kyle Barnes cult and their standoff in a small farm just outside of Rome in some weeks. But there’s new developments tonight. It seems the people of the town have gathered outside the walls en masse, to finally put an end to the conflict. For months now, Kyle Barnes and his followers have been living on the farm. They erected a wall around the perimeter and closed off all contact with the outside world. The federal government have yet to step in as there isn’t compelling evidence of violence or mistreatment on the farm. The two sides have been locked in stalemate until now.
